The Chicago-Latrobe 790 series regular length spotting bit is made from solid carbide with an uncoated (bright) finish and has a 120-degree conventional point for drilling a pilot hole for a 118-degree secondary drill bit into hard materials. Solid carbide is harder than high-speed or cobalt steel, provides longer tool life at higher speeds, and produces close-tolerance holes in hard materials. The uncoated finish has no additional surface treatment or coating. A spotting drill bit is used to drill a pilot hole, which reduces walking and improves hole accuracy for the secondary drill bit. This spotting drill bit has a 120-degree conventional point that drills a shallow pilot hole to guide a second drill bit with a 118-degree point. The round shank accommodates most drill chucks. spotting-drill-bits
