About the Author

Dr. Liz Przybylski (BA, Bard College, MA and PhD, Northwestern University) is an Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at UC Riverside, where she specializes in hip hop performance practices. As an ethnographer whose research sites exist between the online and offline in hybrid fields, her interdisciplinary popular music research moves with performers, industry professionals, and audiences, responding to changes in technology and communication strategies.
            Dr. Przybylski was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research with hip hop artists and music broadcasters in Winnipeg. Her research in both popular music pedagogy and Indigenous hip hop appears in Ethnomusicology, Journal of Borderlands Studies, and IASPM Journal, among others.  She has presented her findings internationally, including at the Society for Ethnomusicology, Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, Feminist Theory and Music, International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and International Council for Traditional Music World Conferences. She also shares ideas from her research projects in free and open access articles, blog posts, and online commentary. As part of her ongoing project to present her work in multimedia formats, Dr. Przybylski hosted the world music show “Continental Drift” on WNUR in the Chicago area and has conducted interviews with musicians for programs including “At The Edge of Canada: Indigenous Research” on CJUM in Winnipeg. Also working with new media and web-based sources, she served as the Media Reviews Editor for the journal American Music.
            Committed to linking research with pedagogy, Dr. Przybylski’s teaching works in tandem with the interdisciplinary nature of her scholarship. She regularly teaches ethnographic methods at the graduate level, and other courses are often cross-listed in fields including anthropology, gender and sexuality studies, and ethnic studies. She has also taught adult and pre-college learners at the American Indian Center in Chicago and the Concordia Language Villages program of Concordia College. In professional leadership, her elected positions include serving as the President of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawaii Chapter and on the Society for Ethnomusicology Council.
