Product Description

It is a sleepover extravaganza when Nonna Lidia has her grandkids over for a night full of campfire stories and homemade food. As they all share a meal of omelets the next morning, Nonna Lidia reminisces about growing up on the farm, raising chickens, and gathering their eggs, which inspires a family trip to the local farm, where the kids can have their own chicken-and-egg adventures.

With farm-fresh recipes focused on chicken and eggs, America’s beloved Italian-American chef Lidia Matticchio Bastianich offers a variety family-friendly dishes and fun, safe ways kids can help cook. Buon appetito!

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Nonni Lidia is having a sleepover with her five grandchildren who are telling scary stories by flashlight. When little Julia is a frightened by a tale of a too sly fox, Nonni takes over the storytelling. What follows is a lesson in growing up on a farm as a young girl, and at last the kids turn in for the night with thoughts of chickens in their heads. The following day after making breakfast with the bunch, Nonni Lidia takes her grandchildren to visit a real local farm to show them where their food comes from. Children will enjoy the simple representation of animals and nature but may balk at Nonni receiving a bag of “chicken parts.” All in all, this is a charming story with rich illustrations. It’s not an audacious adventure but rather a quiet one whose delight is in the subtle storytelling. A series of recipes are included. VERDICT A solid choice for fans of the author and for collections looking to add titles about organics, farming, and cooking.—Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI
