Richard Lyntton was born Richard Bramford in Highgate, London. He is of English descent. He attended William Ellis School, Exeter University, Moscow State Linguistic University (formerly Maurice Thorez Moscow State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages), and Sandhurst.
