One morning, I was rooting around in my cousin Ociee Nash Robnett’s family history files when I noticed a fragile piece of paper. Barely discernable were copies of four old photographs, one of which caught my eye. The words at the bottom read: “J.E. France, Artist, Water Valley, Mississippi.” Hardly taking a breath, I hurried to our camera shop with the potential treasure in hand. To explain more clearly, we could hardly see an image; it was a copy of a copy of a copy. Rather ghostlike in appearance, as if covered in thick white gauze, the picture seemed unworthy of restoration. However, some two weeks later, I was contacted by the shop. Miracle of miracles, they were able to bring the ancient photograph back to life! There she was, Ociee Nash at age 10. Adding to the delightful surprise, the child was the mirror image of her own daughter, my mother, Mary Catherine Whitman McGraw. Of course, this is an old, old photograph, one in which, dictated by the style of those times, the child isn’t smiling. How unlike Ociee is this?! So sharing this picture with readers is more of a sentimental gesture on my part. Nonetheless, it is my great pleasure to finally introduce the real, honest to goodness, Miss Ociee Nash! About the Author

The author of ten books, Milam has worked in PR and as a newspaper reporter. Her favorite professional triumph is the motion picture, “The Adventures of Ociee Nash,” which premiered at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. The movie is based on her award-winning novel, “A Flower Blooms on Charlotte Street,” a story about her beloved grandmother, Ociee. In addition to a series of Ociee books, Milam’s other titles include: “It May Not Leave a Scar,” “Creola’s Moonbeam,” and “Writer, Writer.” Recently released, “My Nun and Her Husband,” is a tribute to the writer’s high school English teacher, a Catholic nun, and her husband. Yes, husband! In 2016, Milam co-wrote a Georgia travel book, “Sidetracked,” with fellow author, Jaclyn Weldon White. The two friends continue to market their book throughout the state, lunching and laughing, and trying their best NOT to become sidetracked! Milam attended St. Agnes Academy in her hometown of Memphis and graduated from St. Pius X in Atlanta. A graduate of the University of Alabama, she is married to her college sweetheart, Jamey Propst; they’ve lived in Atlanta for more than three decades. She and Jamey have three adult children, Amanda, William and his wife, Abigail, and Jay, plus two charming grandsons, Loftin and Emmett.
