Weighing the Bible: Fantasy Fiction or Historical Truth?

The Bible is an ancient document – it covers not just the history of the Jewish people, along with the actions of Jesus and the Apostles, but purports to speak to the very nature of God. If true, then it is in a category all its own. So, can we weigh the Bible against known facts to verify its claims? The answer is “yes.”

The Bible is very specific in defining the passage of years against historical happenings which have known dates. So, we can reconstruct the biblical chronology to determine exact dates for many events such as Abraham’s birth, the Exodus, the building of Solomon’s Temple, Jesus’ crucifixion and even the end-date for the writing of Luke’s “The Acts of the Apostles.”

We can then examine these biblically-dated incidents to see if they truly fit within their historical context. If the biblical accounts match history, then our confidence will be increased that its messages are reliable – otherwise we will be looking at this book as a work of fantasy. And for the “inspired word of God” the bar must be set high; if we find any parts of biblical history to be detached from reality, then we cannot trust any of it.
